Three labs, one standard

From the sapphire heartland of Sri Lanka to the diamond capital of Antwerp and the trading floors of Shanghai, AGL operates a single integrated laboratory network — one certificate database, one analytical protocol, one uncompromising standard of scientific rigour.

A network built around the stones

AGL was founded in Antwerp in 1989, in a city whose diamond-trading heritage stretches back more than five centuries. As our work expanded into coloured stones, we recognised that the most credible gemological reports come from laboratories embedded in the trading and mining communities themselves — not isolated in distant cities. Our Sri Lanka laboratory opened in Beruwala in 2018, placing AGL gemologists directly within walking distance of the Ratnapura and Beruwala sapphire markets. Our Shanghai office, established in 2015, gives Chinese collectors and the Asian luxury trade direct access to AGL grading.

Every certificate, regardless of which laboratory issues it, is recorded in the same secure verification database and is subject to the same analytical protocols. A diamond graded in Antwerp, a sapphire identified in Beruwala, and a jadeite pendant certified in Shanghai are all backed by the identical scientific methodology and the identical chain-of-custody discipline.

One database, one standard

Every AGL certificate — whether issued in Beruwala, Antwerp, or Shanghai — carries a unique report number that can be verified online at any time through our verification portal. The same gemological standards, the same instrumentation specification, and the same two-gemologist review protocol apply to every stone we examine.

Stones may be submitted to any laboratory directly, or arranged for secure courier transport between locations where source-country verification benefits a submission. For example, a sapphire purchased in Europe but suspected to be of Ceylon origin may be routed through our Sri Lanka laboratory for inclusion-pattern comparison against our reference collection of confirmed Ratnapura, Elahera, and Embilipitiya material.

A certificate is only as valuable as the buyer's understanding of what it says.
