Our Services

Comprehensive gemological certification services

From single-stone identification to complete jewellery appraisal, AGL offers the full range of scientific gemological services across our laboratories in Sri Lanka, Antwerp, and Shanghai.

An overview of our work

AGL is a full-spectrum gemological laboratory. We certify rough and polished diamonds, identify and grade every commercially important coloured gemstone, determine country of origin for sapphires, rubies, and emeralds where evidence permits, detect treatments invisible to the naked eye, and issue full reports on finished jewellery pieces. Standard turnaround on most services is five to seven business days from receipt, with express service available at every laboratory.

Pricing depends on stone size, complexity of analysis, and required reporting format. Contact your nearest laboratory or use the form on our contact page for a written quotation.

Six core services

Diamond Grading & Certification

Full 4 Cs analysis — Carat, Colour, Clarity, and Cut — on polished diamonds, supported by proportions analysis, fluorescence assessment, and high-resolution plotted clarity diagrams. Reports include fluorescence reaction under long-wave UV, polish and symmetry grades, and table-and-depth proportions. Suitable for retail certification, insurance valuation, and resale documentation.

Turnaround: 5–7 days

Coloured Gemstone Identification

Definitive species and variety identification for sapphires, rubies, emeralds, tourmalines, spinels, garnets, tanzanites, and every commercially important coloured stone. Includes refractive index, specific gravity, pleochroism, fluorescence, microscopic inclusion study, and spectroscopy. Determines natural-versus-synthetic origin where the distinction can be made on present evidence.

Turnaround: 5–7 days

Origin Determination

Country-of-origin assessment for sapphires, rubies, and emeralds using LIBS, ED-XRF, FTIR, and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy combined with inclusion-pattern analysis against our reference collection. Origins reported only where the analytical signature is unambiguous — we never speculate. Mogok, Mong-Hsu, Ceylon, Kashmir, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Colombian designations are issued only on the strength of recorded data.

Turnaround: 7–10 days

Treatment Detection

Detection and reporting of heat treatment, beryllium diffusion, lead-glass filling, fracture filling, oiling and resin impregnation in emeralds, surface coatings, irradiation, and HPHT treatment in diamonds. FTIR spectroscopy is central to our treatment workflow, supplemented by microscopic examination under fibre-optic illumination and immersion. Every treatment we observe is disclosed plainly on the certificate.

Turnaround: 5–7 days

Jewellery Certification

Full identification and grading of every gemstone set in a finished jewellery piece — rings, pendants, earrings, brooches, necklaces, and bracelets. Reports include metal assay, total piece weight, individual stone weights (estimated for mounted stones), and a photograph of the finished piece. Ideal for retail certification, estate documentation, and insurance scheduling.

Turnaround: 7–10 days

Express Service

For time-critical trade transactions, auction submissions, and travelling dealers, AGL offers express turnaround at every laboratory. Standard identification reports can be issued within 24–48 hours, and full origin reports within 72 hours, subject to laboratory schedule and analytical complexity. Express service incurs a surcharge — contact the laboratory directly to arrange.

All AGL services are priced per stone or per piece, with discounts available for parcels and trade clients with regular volume. Standard turnaround is five to seven business days from the moment your stone is received at the laboratory; complex origin work and finished jewellery may require seven to ten days. Express service is available at every laboratory for urgent submissions.

How to submit a gemstone

Stones may be delivered in person to any of our three laboratories, or shipped to us by insured courier (we will provide a secure-shipping protocol on request). Each submission is logged on arrival, photographed, weighed, and assigned a unique report number with full chain-of-custody tracking from the moment it enters our facility until it is returned to the client.

A certificate is only as valuable as the buyer's understanding of what it says.
